The last bus is leaving, but you're on the curb
You wanted to run but you're lacking the nerve
And motionless standing, you can't find a word
Name:: Cushari (Cu, Ri) [koo-SHAHR-ee]
Species:: Human
Class:: Terris
Age:: 25
Gender:: Female
Primary Residence:: Terris
Occupation:: Baker
Sexual Orientation::
Martial Status:: Single
The taillights are fading, your feet on the ground
Your bags, like an anchor, are weighing you down
You're moored to the future, you're stuck in this town
Cushari is of average height for a Terriswoman—which, of course, means she towers high above most nobles. She doesn’t need to be in a crowd of Luthadel visitors to be visible, though. For one thing, thanks to a job that rarely requires hard labour and constantly exposes her to food, Cu is slightly overweight—an unusual characteristic among the often-starved population of the Final Empire. Moreover, her unusually light blonde hair calls attention to itself even when it’s behaving, and if there’s any moisture in the air at all, the frizzing just makes it worse.
Like many of her people, Ri jingles when she walks. Copper pendants on black cords, thin bangles, numerous rings, and various other ornaments adorn her daily. Underneath the jewelry, however, her clothes tend to be very unassuming. Rarely does Cushari wear anything other than a simple tunic with pants, and she tends to favor greys. If she needs to dress up, her preferred colour is light blue, to match her eyes.
You turn to your left and I'm standing alone
With a numbness that's lingering deep in my bones
And it looks like you're gonna be coming back home
As an infertile woman, Cushari has been taught that she is essentially useless to Terris society, and she seems to believe it. Even the humbleness accepted as normal among Terrispeople pales in comparison to Cu’s self-effacing behavior; she is always the first to cringe away, apologize, or accept misplaced blame.
Despite this, Cu isn’t weak-minded. Though she’s no mastermind, she’s a clever enough woman and enjoys being challenged. Baking day in and day out simply isn’t enough to keep her interested in life. She yearns for adventure, the problem being that she’s so used to considering herself worthless that she doesn’t think she would survive outside of Tathingdwen.
She’s stronger than she gives herself credit for. Stubbornness alone once kept her from starving, and she’s always had remarkable emotional resilience. Baking isn’t her only skill, either, and both metalworking and having a good head for numbers might help her if she ever decided to follow up on her daydreams. All the same, she’s a diehard pessimist—especially about herself—and for all her wishing, she can’t bring herself to run away.
Take another way, take another way
Take another way, take another way
Most Terris children have very little interaction with their relatives, and Cushari is no exception. Even her relationship with her mother was strained; the woman resented her daughter as a symbol of her enslavement, and wanted as little as possible to do with her. Ri was more or less raised by the older children in the Breeding Centers—particularly a boy named Voski, who was six years older than her and treated her like a younger sister.
Eventually it was determined that Cu was infertile, and she was kicked out of the 'Center to make her way in Tathingdwen if she could. After a few terrifying years on the brink, she made a name for herself as a baker, and has been doing fairly well economically ever since. However, she’s deeply unhappy with her life. Voski has been gone in Luthadel for years now; for all she knows, he could be dead. As a child she was convinced that she would become a Keeper, but around the time her infertility was declared she finally accepted that she doesn’t have a lick of magic, and now she isn’t quite sure what to aim for. With direction, she might be able to overcome the fear that keeps her grounded in her birth city, but for now she’s floating in limbo.
Take another way home
Other Characters:: Caoilinn (unfinished), Ratimir (unfinished).
Other:: Cushari is a combination of Cu (the symbol for copper, which I wanted as a nickname since she wants to be a Keeper so badly) and Shahrivar, a Persian god of metal and protection.
Song:: "Anchor" by Josh Woodward
