The Pits of Hathsin
The horrid prison for any and all of the Final Empire’s condemned. The only atium mine in existence, closely guarded only by those most loyal to the Lord Ruler. The Pits of Hathsin.
The prisoners here have been sentenced to a punishment considered worse than death. To live the rest of their mortal lives slaving in dark caverns for atium geodes. If they fail to find an atium geode once a week then their pathetic lives will be ended quickly by the merciless beating of the Pit’s taskmasters.
Although Allomancy would be a much more effective way of mining the crystals the Lord Ruler is forced to use simple slave labor to get the precious metal. Using allomancy near atium crystals or geodes will cause them to burst and shatter, leaving that particular atium bud empty for hundreds and hundreds of years, unable to produce atium. The atium buds are what cause the long thin scars across all the convicts arms. Large crystal form a circular pattern around an atium geode, leaving a small space open in the center where the geode can be found. In order to retrieve the geodes the prisoners must stick their arms down these small holes, raking their arms against the sharp crystals.
The pits are watched over by House Venture, one of the high noble houses and is often considered the most powerful. It is a closely guarded secret that the Pits are not under the Lord Ruler’s direct control. In fact he is careful to keep the Venture’s under careful watch, lest they plot to steal his atium.
The Pits of Hathsin system: If your character is caught doing anything “un-lawful” (stealing, thieving, rebelling) by any kind of authority figure (soldier, Obligator, Lord) they will be sent to the pits. Your character can continue any threads that were started before going into the pits but they can’t join or make any threads outside of the pits once they are a prisoner. However I completely understand that you don’t want your character living out the rest of their lives in this awful hell-hole. Instead you want to return them to the wonderful and trashy cities! Well good news for you since after two weeks you can PM Ruin (me) for your character to be “released” from the Pits. However, no one escapes the pits, no one, so your character will have no memory of what happened here and no scars either. It isn’t required that you come out, stay in the prison for as long as you like, you can even request to send one of your characters there by PMing Ruin. Personally I think it’s a great way to kill characters off but it is also fun to have them RP with the other prisoners or taskmasters here in this extra brutal version of the world.
